Area Activity Guide: Erie Canal
April 2015
Spring is making its presence felt more and more every day, so it’s time to start thinking about exploring some local landmarks! The legendary Erie Canal was completed in 1852, and helped open up Western New York to the rest of the country and arguably, the rest of the world. It created a viable connection between the Atlantic and the Great Lakes that ran right through the then-blossoming city of Rochester, NY. Although the canal no longer runs through the heart of downtown, it is still a large area draw, thanks in no small part to the incredible local effort in creating a multitude of attractions surrounding our own section of the great Erie Canal.
For example, what better way to experience the majestic Erie Canal than by floating down it? Luckily, there are two different companies within a 20 minute drive that will take you on a canal ride, should you decide to take that adventure. Sam Patch, out of Pittsford (a 15 minute jaunt from Elmwood Manor Apartments), offers cruises on a gorgeous replica packet canal boat, beginning in early May. A short 20 minute drive will get you to Fairport’s Colonial Belle canal cruises. Colonial Belle offers the largest tour boat on the canal, as well as themed cruises, starting in late spring. Both cruise lines offer their trips at under $20 a person! If boats aren’t your thing, there are numerous biking and walking trails all along the canal (like near Pittsford’s Schoen Place). Take advantage of this national treasure and have an adventure or two while you’re at it!
