Area Activity Guide: Fleet Boat Club
August 2017
Amazing Natural Resources
One of the best things about living in Rochester is that we’re surrounded by water. With the Erie Canal, Irondequoit Bay, and Lake Ontario so close to the city, it’s easy to make your way to the water’s edge any day of the week. Few cities can boast such an abundance of fresh water, let alone their very own legitimate beach. But if you’re new to the city, attending one of the area’s Universities, renting an apartment, or don’t have family in the area, Rochester’s water scene can inspire an unfortunate condition — boat envy.
The Ultimate Lake Access
While a dip in the lake, a concert on the beach, or a picnic in the park is perfectly nice, there’s nothing like cruising out onto Lake Ontario on a beautiful, sunny day. A boat is the best place to celebrate summer with friends or drift along while you take in an amazing sunset. The only problem is, boats are incredibly expensive to procure, maintain, and store. Well, Fleet Boat Club has a solution for a new generation of boat people. Some call it a boat share, while the technical term is “fractional boat ownership.”
Rochester’s Own Boat Timeshare
According to Fleet, their membership model is for “people who want to enjoy the pleasure of boating without the hassle and expense of boat ownership or the limitations of boat rental.” The company owns a literal fleet of later-model boats that can be used just for cruising or for sports like waterskiing, tubing, and wake-boarding. Boats are docked and available for use by members on Irondequoit Bay, Canandaigua Lake, and Braddock Bay. Memberships are priced based on the number of reservations you can have booked at one time, with the most affordable option being a weekday-only plan. Members enjoy unlimited use of the boats, and Fleet takes care of all maintenance, docking, storage, insurance — even cleaning!
The Best of the Boat Life
We at Elmwood Manor have no stake in or relationship with the people over at Fleet. But we think it’s awesome that there’s an easy option for residents — even those in town only for a short time — to enjoy our local lakes to the fullest. You don’t even have to have boating experience or a license. The club’s orientation includes on-the-water practice operating a boat with a skilled instructor. If you have aspirations of becoming a boat person but haven’t been sure how to make it happen, Fleet Boat Club could make that dream a reality.
