Area Activity Guide: Late-Season Leaf Peeping
October 2016
Don’t Miss Leaf-Peeping Season!
Have you made it out of the city to catch some breathtaking views of foliage this fall? If not, don’t worry. You can get a glimpse even if you stay close to home.
Peak viewing has passed throughout about a third of New York State. Fortunately, leaves in the Finger Lakes region and Wayne County are at or near their peak this week. If you have access to a convertible, consider a long lakeside drive with the top down. The dramatic views at Letchworth are especially captivating this time of year. Even the city’s many parks are blooming with the beautiful shades and scents of fall.
Overall, Upstate New York is having something of an underwhelming leaf-peeping season. This year’s long droughts may have limited the red, orange, and yellow chemicals expected to show through in autumn. Still, leaf peeping holds an important place among the season’s traditions like long walks in the woods, hot apple cider, and evenings spent cozied up in front of a fire.
