Area Activity Guide: State Parks
April 2015
Spring is here! We can finally go outside without immediately risking frostbite. If you’re looking for a way to celebrate this momentous occasion, we’ve got a couple of great, family-friendly suggestions. We’re not sure if you’re aware of this, but Western New York is home to two of the top three State Parks. That’s something to be proud of, and something to explore this spring and summer! And there’s no better family outing than getting outside for fresh air and exercise.
USA Today has ranked Livingston and Wyoming counties’ very own Letchworth State Park the number one State Park in the country! With spectacular views of waterfalls and gorges and more than 40 miles of hiking spread across 14,000 acres of sprawling nature, Letchworth is a truly fantastic sight to behold. It’s easy to see why it’s often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the East.”
Coming in at number three in USA Today’s list is Watkins Glen State Park. While it’s a bit further from Elmwood Manor Apartments, it makes a lovely day trip, and it is every bit as stunning as Letchworth. The Glen is famous for its 2-mile stream that descends 200 feet. This creates 19 breathtaking waterfalls, and the main trail leads a hiker under and through the actual waterfalls. You will never forget the experience. There are miles and miles of alternate trails surrounding the Glen itself, as well. For both parks, trail difficulties and lengths are widely varied, so there is something for everyone!
There is nothing like immersing oneself in nature to enliven the spirit, and we are fortunate to have two world-class locations in which to do just that. So grab your hiking shoes, pack up your friends and family, and bask in nature’s beauty.
