Area Activity Guide: Winter Family Fun
February 2015
Yikes. It’s been quite a winter already, and we’re not close to being done yet. If you or your family are anything like us, you’re getting a bit stir-crazy. But don’t despair! We at Elmwood Manor Apartments are here to help. We’ve got three suggestions for great places to take the family (or just yourself!) during these cold winter weeks.
First of all, did you know the Seneca Park Zoo is open all year long? It’s true! From 10AM to 4PM each and every day, you can head on in and see all kinds of animals – primates, elephants, rhinos, birds, reptiles, big cats, seals, and even polar bears! Now there’s one animal that feels right at home these days. You can find out about zoo memberships here, and upcoming zoo events here. Come enjoy your local zoo!
Winter is the perfect time to explore the possibilities of the mind, and the Rochester Museum and Science Center is the perfect place to do that! The Museum has all kinds of exhibits and a downstairs area that allows kids (and adults, too, of course) to learn about the way our great world works through hands on games, activities, and experiments. It’s a great way to make education direct, tangible, and fun! And just like the zoo, the RMSC has special events, a listing of which can be found here. Get those kids moving…and learning!
Speaking of moving and learning simultaneously, there are few places in the country as perfect for that as the Strong National Museum of Play. That’s right! The National Museum of Play is located right here in Rochester, and it lives up to its name and then some. Strong has two entire floors to engage, entertain, and teach everyone from infants to the most grown-up of grown-ups. The first floor is a collection of toys, games, and play opportunities that will capture any child’s imagination, and probably those of their parents, too. It includes rotating exhibitions, a rideable train, a shop-able mini-Wegmans, Storybook villages, playground equipment and attractions, and an absolutely beautiful classic carousel. But it doesn’t end there. Upstairs is a world-class toy museum, with everything from 19th century dolls to 20th-century arcade game consoles, and everything in between. Strong Museum is a remarkable treasure we are fortunate enough to have right in our own backyard. You simply must see it to believe it.
We hope these suggestions will give you and your family some ways to get active this winter, and to stave off cabin fever!
