Area Activity Guide:Made on State Open House

January 2017

One under-appreciated thing about a not-so-snowy winter in Upstate New York is how it drives you to find intriguing things to do indoors. The first weekend in February boasts an amazing opportunity for Rochesterians and visitors alike to explore the makers who drive the creativity and creation taking place in our city.

What is MADE ON STATE?

MADE ON STATE, in Rochester’s High Falls District, is nearly an entire city block of renovated, interconnected structures designed to provide economically sustainable, usable spaces for creative entrepreneurs to expand their craft. From conceptualization and design, to hands on fabrication and creation, MADE ON STATE is where creative things happen.

MADE ON STATE goes beyond traditional artists’ lofts with a combination of art, craftsmanship, and business savvy, and their Winter Open House is your chance to explore what’s going on within those walls. Unlike First Friday’s open-format events, these quarterly programs will offer a tour of artist studios, demonstrations of various techniques, and a brief introduction highlighting the latest projects being undertaken by the artisans.

Don’t forget First Friday!

February 3rd is, of course, First Friday, which means that an array of establishments, including the Anderson Arts and Hungerford buildings, will open their doors and studios to the public from 6 to 9 pm. Kick off the weekend by exploring a broad swath of artistry throughout a combined nine floors of artists’ lofts at these two locations. Alternatively, you can skip the big buildings entirely and explore the rest of the First Friday map. Wherever you go, you’ll likely find free snacks, live music, and maybe even some interesting ice cream.
